one? You might find interest in visiting one of
my personal hobby sites called www.joiesjeeps.com
I have created a Hurst SC/Rambler registry and
you can read about Jeeps, American Motors Muscle
cars and get to know Joie a little more as well!

my name is Joie Vaughan. Wife, homemaker, new mother
and graphic artist!
I started exploring my interest in becoming a graphic
artist after I had acquired this very expensive G-4
computer that, at the time I had no idea how to use.
I inherited it from my son who lost interest in it when
he started noticing girls and Toyota Supra's. I had
used it to create business cards and flyers for my company
which at the time was in the automotive industry. A
tough enough industry to begin with and being .....well
a girl, made life interesting. Soon I began to enjoy
the computer and made it my friend! This was a much
cleaner job and my hands didn't get bruised up and dirty.
I've come from a line of talented artists but never
explored it out side the car scene. I've used my artistic
abilities to create spectacular works of detail and
showmanship on many cars and hot rods and in the making
collected plenty of wall plaques and trophies to dust
now. My hot rod and former best friend is temporally
resting comfortably under the car cover I might add.
( just a note for those who think that Joie has flipped
her lid ) Hey what do ya know, there is more to life
My experience in computers was limited to what I had
taught myself, and I was really reluctant to try new
things, because, usually it resulted in freezing the
computer and loosing what I had forgotten to save and
screaming at the computer screen like an idiot wasn't
helping. My husband stood behind me one day while I
was trying to figure something out and said in a very
firm voice, "Push the button!." Needless to
say I realized at that point that I was afraid of a
keyboard and that was just silly, so I pushed all the
buttons and what do ya know, things started to happen
and before I knew it, I designed what I had imagined!
In no time at all I was creating advertisements for
my friends’ businesses. I started to take the
computer more seriously and my husband supported the
idea of me going back to school. I am now a graduate
of a computer graphic design course at the Mission Community
Skills Centre, taught by Mimmo Carbone & Frank Gundermann.
Why hire Grafik
Proffessional graphic artists like myself work with clients
to achieve the most impact from the advertising while staying
with in the budgets of small and large business. When you
have limited budgets for your company, you want to consider
choices that ensure you have the right designer working for
you. With printed media or any advertising for that fact,
if you haven't captured the attention of your target viewers
in the first 2 seconds, then in all probability your ad or
message will not get read and certainly not remembered. Now
that seems rather harsh, but it is true …you could try
a few simple tests to prove this point to yourself. Flash
some ads in a magazine or business cards in front of a trusty
volenteer about 3 or 4 feet away and for not more than 2 or
3 seconds and see if they can remember what they saw, or even
identify what kind of business was being advertised or what
they were selling. It will surprise you, and in some cases
make you mad, especially if you paid someone big bucks to
design it for you. When it comes to viewing anything, be it
advertising or even a simple word document, there are basic
rules of good layout and design that must be followed in order
for your advetising to work.
With the rise in home desktop publishers, we witness less
and less good layout & design principles in printed media
and on the internet. People like to do it themselves, and
hey they do and are usually quite proud of what they have
done, but, if they have no training in Layout & Design
then in fact what they did do was spend countless hours in
front of a computer screen creating something that looks fantastic
and with absolutely no experience using these rules of basic
principles for the purpose of advertising, what they designed
although it looks great, it might not work!
The big WWW is no acception! Some web designers will tell
you that these principles don't apply to the internet. HA,
that is the biggest pile of dog doo doo I have ever heard.
When I went back to school specifically to understand what
good layout and design is. The big surprise to me it has nothing
to do with what I thought it did. It is not necessarily the
prettiest flashiest ad or the best graphics but how, when
and where they are used in strict accordance to these basic
principles and you need to be aware them at all times. There
are no exceptions to this! In fact if you ignore these princilples,
you will create confusion rather than an understanding of
the ad or point your trying to make!
Design principles are not what you might think they are.
They are based on 100's of years of study on just how the
human brain perceives what it sees. This fact is true whether
it is in print media or on the screen in front of you! I used
to think I was a great designer until I learned that it had
nothing to do with the design but everything to do with the
layout. The easy and comfortable reading and instant understanding
your brain requires to take it all in, will be a huge deciding
factor for your potential consumers.
My teacher, Mimmo Carbone, has been in the graphic industry
for over 40 years, "MY GOAL" is to be as sharp and
brilliant as he is. I was amazed at what I had learned and
everyday I remember his words of wisdom and it is still as
much a new lesson as it is a challenge to keep in perspective
what I am trying to accomplish. I must continuously ask myself…
Is this working or does it just look pretty?
I am a detail freak and at the very least I have to be able
to design Graphic Ads and Web Sites that work. I have the
ability to think way outside the box and combined with my
creative talent, I am positive GRAFIK SCENES can create advertising
that will work for you, your business and your budget!
